SHIVLING ABHISHEKAM ON MAHA SHIVRATRI
Valentine’s Day and Mahashivratri fall usually a month apart or so. On Valentine’s Day every year crores of rupees are spent to express love. People use flowers, chocolate, dinners in expensive restaurants, liquors, perfumes, teddy bears, new dresses, kisses, hugs, jewelry, promises, etc. to express their love. May be nothing wrong in expressing love but when Mahashivratri is celebrated then many people specially youngsters and some celebrities start expressing their unhappiness and anger on the use of milk in abhishekam (pouring milk on Shiv lingam). Usually the argument is that instead of pouring milk on Shiv lingam that milk can be given to a poor kid/ person. However, on Valentine’s Day this thought never comes in their mind of buying milk or food or give money to poor people. In India on an average a Valentine’s Day gift costs somewhere between Rs. 2000 to Rs.3000. For Mahashivratri one cup of milk costs may be Rs. 20/- or Rs. 30/-. When these devotees buy milk, flowers, dhatura leaves, roli, Kumkum, etc. usually they buy these items from the poor people who have put their stalls near the temples. The sale of these pooja samagri (items) helps many poor people to make some money. Besides this these devotees also distribute prasadam (meal) and money to people around temple area. Let’s take the argument of giving milk to a poor kid or a poor grown up person on Mahashivratri. Now question arises how much milk anyone can drink in one day. Further, let’s be realistic, and think, can we nourish a kid or a person for whole of his or her life by offering one cup of milk once in a year on Mahashivratri day. I’m sure one cup of milk once in a year doesn’t make any difference in anybody’s life or health. Other argument is given that this abhishekam pollutes the water. This argument is also not correct. No water body gets polluted by milk. We give bath to Lord Shiva once in a year with milk and other fluids, the washed away liquid doesn’t pollute water bodies. However, our water bodies do get polluted by the shampoos, soap bars, hair color, conditioners, hair styling creams, hair sprays, etc. which all of us use everyday to take shower. We don’t stop using these chemicals for our shower, but we do object about the Lord Shiva’s abhishekam where no chemicals are used. Those who protest such rituals they should understand that these rituals are good for the whole society. The use of certain pooja samagri (items) in rituals attract good positive energies, and these positive energies help the whole society. Other aspect is that we glorify all great things in our lives. What could be greater than God. Just think of the protocol which great people get on this earth. Think of presidents, prime ministers, ministers, spiritual leaders, sports persons, artists, authors, scientists, astronauts, media people, nobles prize winners, diplomats, film actors, etc. how much we glorify them. We use flowers, garlands, red carpet, big convention halls, cultural programs, nice snacks, lunches, dinners, etc. to express our appreciations for them. If we can glorify humans then why we cannot glorify our God. If we can take shower everyday with tons of chemicals, then why we cannot give bath to our God with harmless milk and water. Those who offer milk to God they all are religious minded people who believe in sharing. They offer to God and they share with poor people also. These religious minded people arrange prasadam, soup kitchens, distributions of blankets, construction of shelters, free treatments to those in need, distribution of water in summer season, providing education to poor kids, running different trusts for poor people, eye treatments, free operations, schools, hospitals, help in higher education, etc. These devotees do so many good things for the society in addition to offering one cup of milk to God on Mahashivratri. These devotees offer to God and also feed poor people. When we give gifts to our parents, it’s not that they need it, rather we give to show our gratitude and affection for them. Same way we offer many things to God to express our gratitude to that Almighty. If you do not want to offer anything to God, no nobody will force you. Same as our parents never ask us for anything same way God also doesn’t ask for anything. It is our own feeling of gratitude which makes us to offer few things to God, given by Him only to us. Let’s enjoy and celebrate the Glory of Lord Shiva on Mahashivratri.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the many forms of arthritis. Only the severity of pain and damage to the joints and muscles can be controlled to a certain extent with the use of medicines and infusion. The research is still on to find out the cause of this disease. Still, it's an unsolved mystery why our own immune system starts attacking our own body cells. Why our immune system gets confused between foreign body and cells of our own body. I was thinking about this puzzle since a long time. One day a thought dawned to me. If we see around us, most of the Rheumatoid arthritis patients will tell you that they got this disease during a certain period of their life when they were going through a stress, grief, or any other hard time or difficult phase of their life, and they were pushing themselves very hard to survive through that phase. Let's take the example of a machine. Let's say it's about our washing machine. If we load too many clothes in washing machine, then sometimes washer drum stops spinning. Then we have to take out few clothes out to make it easier for the washer drum to spin the load. However, when it comes to humans, we are not that kind to ourselves. We keep pushing ourselves far beyond our capacity. When we do not stop pushing ourselves then our body comes out with its own plan to stop us. I think when we push ourselves too hard then our immune system starts thinking that now we have become our own enemy and then it starts attacking our own healthy body cells. And no doubt after our immune system starts attacking us we stop pushing ourselves. So, what is the solutions to calm down our overactive immune system. I guess plenty of sleep, proper rest, less inflammatory food, and stop taking sugar and keep an eye on hidden sugars. Less or no intake of sugar helps considerably to reduce inflammation and stiffness in Rheumatoid arthritis.
